[Formerly Chapter Seven]

The family of James Scott, 1777-1853, and his wife Sarah Dickey Scott, 1777-1838
The following tintype was found in the family album of "Sade" Sarah Elizabeth Scott Huie
(Mrs. Julius M. Huie), 1839-1893. Her album contains many likenesses, but nowhere therein
does she list her paternal grandfather (James Scott, 1777-1853), or her father
("Jimps" James Scott, 1810-1872), or her father-in-law (Benjamin Huie, 1798-1879).
Therefore, I advance three candidates for consideration as being the subject of the following
tintype or daguerreotype:
•••••(1st possibility) James Scott, 1777-1853. Is it this paternal grandfather
of Sarah Elizabeth Scott Huie? --This James Scott was a great-grear grandfather of
 Howard EWING Huie (my father) and Maury Adolphus Huie
•••••(2nd possibility) A son of the above James Scott named "Jimps" Scott, 1810-1882, the father
of "Sade" Sarah Elizabeth Scott Huie (Mrs. Julius M. Huie)--is that who is in the picture?
--"Jimps" was a great-grandfather of Howard EWING Huie (my father) and Maury Adolphus Huie
•••••(3rd possibility) Benjamin Huie, 1798-1879, the father-in-law of "Sade" Sarah Elizabeth Scott
Huie (Mrs. Julius M. Huie) --great grandfather of Howard EWING Huie (my father) and Maury Adolphus Huie

The subject below is holding a book, probably a Bible, and not a toothbrush.
I think Maury Adolphus Huie, 1895-1973, bore a remarkable resemblance to whoever this was--
but BENJAMIN HUIE (1798 or 1799-1879) and JAMES SCOTT, 1777-1853, and James "Jimps" Scott, 1810-?1882? --each a
candidate-- were all direct ancestors of Maury Adolphs Huie, so it really doesn't help identify the person in the photo
to say Uncle Mutt looked like him :

Our Scott People Known To Be Interred in the Old Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery, Yorkville, Tennessee:

SCOTT, James [here referred to for convenience as James Scott I] of Pennsylvania, then York District, South Carolina,
 born Aug. 20, 1777 – died Dec 30, 1853[122]; and James Scott’s wife, Sarah Dickey Scott,
a daughter of John Dickey of York District, South Carolina, & wife Sarah Robinson Dickey.
According to a posting by SCOTT MILLS (at that time his email address was [email protected] &
I think he is a lawyer
in the D.C. area, but I cannot locate him), the father of this James Scott, 1777-1853, was a James
 I, brother to a John Scott; and the earlier James & his brother John Scott were the emigrants
 from Scotland. I, Marsha, know nothing about the parentage of James Scott, 1777-1853.

SCOTT, Sarah Dickey  --1777-1838
born 1777; died aged 60 Years 4 Months 23 Days, died 23 March 1838.
  Although our records do not reveal her parentage, subsequent research, especially by James Ragon of Jackson, Tenn.,
 makes us almost certain that her mother was Sarah Robinson (Dickey) of York District, SC,
 and her father was John Dickey of SC.  This leads to questions about her Robinson lineage.
  Two likely Robinsons buried in this same Old Yorkville cemetery are:
ROBINSON, Jefferson, 61 Years, 6 Month, 22 Days. September 4, 1865 [born circa 1801]
ROBINSON, Martha T, (Wife of J.) b.2 August 181012 April 1840
[Is the above James Scott, 1777-1853, the “old friend Scott” to whom Margaret Morrison McCorkle refers
in her 1838 letter to her daughter Elmira?  If so, James Scott married 1838-1839 a “respectable old lady” as a 2nd wife.
Indeed, Gibson County, Tennessee, records show the marriage in 1838 of a James Scott to a Mary Landers (Scott).

◄       [Scott, James ["JIMPS"], a son of James Scott (I) and Sarah Dickey Scott  --
 No marker or record exists of his being buried here; but his wife Violet or Viola B. Roddy Scott is buried here,
 in the Old Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery; and he is, too. He was born 1810 and because he appears
in the 1880 census as "paralyzed" I have come to think he died in 1882, not 1872.]
◄       SCOTT, “Violet” B. Roddy, wife of James Scott II). “Wife of James Scott”
V.B. Roddy Scott is listed on the Gibson County, Tennessee, Cemeteries, website as:
SCOTT, Unknown (Wife of James) Feb 7, 1813 - May 31, 1847. --Evidently, she died just past the age of 34, poor thing.
She & James Scott [II] married in Gibson County on 8 Dec. 1832.  She lived Feb 7, 1813 - May 31, 1847
 This is Violet or Viola B. Roddy (Scott), wife of James Scott Jr. [Was her father John R. Roddy
 I never heard Aunt Beth Huie or Uncle Maury A. Huie, or my father Ewing Huie mention the name “Roddy.”
They probably knew more about a 2nd wife of "Jimps" James Scott if there was one, but I'm not even sure about that.]
 Violet B. Roddy Scott was the mother of: Martha E. Scott McCorkle, 1836-1886; John H. Scott, 1837;
 Sarah E. Scott Huie, 1839-1893; James Allen Scott, born a twin to Sarah Huie; Martha E. Scott, 1841-1873,
(alias the 1st Mrs. Anderson Jehiel McCorkle); “ClementineTirzah Scott Trimble, 1843-1887; Allen "Tobe" Scott (father
of Ida Scott (Parrish)(Moore), Dr, Allen GRAY Scott, Ernest Scott...;
Margaret (the 1st Mrs. David Purviance McCorkle); and also Violet B. Roddy Scott was the mother of
Rev. Thomas Elihu Scott, born 1845.

SCOTT, James [I].   Aug 20, 1777 - Dec 30, 1853 --Upon the death of his 1st wife SARAH DICKEY SCOTT, did he
 marry a 2nd wife named MARY LANDERS? Was he the “Old Friend Scott who married a very respectable old lady”
 according to a letter from Margaret Morrison McCorkle dated 1838 or 9?  That would fit, as Gibson County marriage records show the marriage in 1838 or 1839
of a James Scott [but which one?] to a Mary Landers.

 SCOTT, Sarah [Dickey].   b.1777.  60Y, 4M, 23D	 died March 23, 1838

WILLIAM SCOTT Died 28 March 1835, aged 28 Days.
      This infant was probably a child of Violet B. Roddy & “JIMPS” James Scott,
 who married in Gibson County in 1832.  [Does he belong here as a child of James “Jimpse” James Scott Violet B.
Roddy Scott??] [Or could he have been a child of Margaret Permelia McCorkle & Lemuel Locke Scott?]
 This William Scott is buried in the Old Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery
and is presumably a child of Violet/Viola B. Roddy Scott:  William Scott
 --if so, he was named after the brother of “JIMPS” James Scott named William Scott.
It was that brother William Scott who m. Nancy Alice Edwards Wellborn & begot,
 inter alia, the 1st Mrs. John Edwin McCorkle: Tennie Scott (McCorkle) [full name:
  Tennessee Alice Edwards Scott (McCorkle)]. Or, perhaps—and much less likely to me—
this infant child was a son of William Scott & wife Nancy Edwards Wellborn.
William (a son of James I & Sarah Dickey Scott) & Nancy Scott lived at least for a time,
and are buried, near Saulsbury, near Grand Junction, Hardeman County, Tennessee,
 in what used to be called the Scott Cemetery but is now called the Jackson Cemetery by their Jackson descendants.
 It was a private cemetery, and I’m told that the farmer who owns the land now has recently desecrated the old graves;
I hope that’s not true.

Now to the children of James Scott (JIMPSE) Scott & Violet B. or Viola B. Roddy Scott:

1.     Martha E Scott (McCorkle), born 3 Sep 1836 in  Gibson County, Tennessee
 Died 14 January 1886 (at about 50 years old). Married Anderson Jehiel McCorkle,
a son of Edwin Alexander McCorkle & wife Jane Maxwell Thomas
(McCorkle).  A J McCorkle was born 27 Jan. 1834 & died 12 Jan. 1922 in Dyer County.
Martha E. Scott McCorkle was a sister to “Sade” Sarah Elizabeth Scott Huie
 (Mrs. Julius M. Huie).
               Martha Scott McCorkle was the mother of two children:
 (a)  John Thomas McCorkle, born 1859- died 4 Jan. 1893; and (b) Maggie MCCORKLE b: 1862 who died very young.
  Uncle Maury A. Huie told me “John Tom” McCorkle-- who m.  ?Della Smith? (McCorkle)
 but died without issue—didn’t hear the train coming at the Newbern-Poplar Grove R.R. tracks.
 “Uncle Mutt,” who was my dad’s double 1st cousin, told me John Tom McCorkle was hard of hearing,
plus that fateful day he wore a cap with drop-down ear coverings.
  –Un le Anderson Jehiel McCorkle kept Marthe E. Scott’s sister Clementine’s husband,
 J.T. Trimble, in his home.  Or perhaps I have that backwards.
Source: Census records of Dyer County, Tennessee, and vague memories of
my dad’s telling me that
Uncle Anderson helped raise Elmo Hundley & Brian Hundley.
My father Ewing Huie said Uncle Anderson raised Clementine [Tirzah H. Scott]
Trimble’s 2 grandchildren,
 sons of Bettie Trimble Hundley:
 “Boss” Elmo Hundley and Brian Hundley, each of whom lived in Yorkville.
 Elmo & Margaret Hundley had one daughter, Bettie Hundley, born circa 1940,
who moved to Houston as a chemist for Sell Oil Co. and never married.
 Brian & Ben Anna Spence Hundley had: Janie Hundley (Mrs. Ralph Hall) of Yorkville;
 Leah Brian Hundley (Mrs.      )
of Nashville; and Buena V. Hundley Sims, of Gibson County.

2.     John H Scott, born 1837 in Dyer County, Tennessee

3.    Sade Huie” Sarah Elizabeth Scott , alias Mrs. Julius M. Huie, 2nd wife of Julius Huie) 23 May 1839-1893.
(Julius M. Huie’s 1st wife McKnight died peri-childbirth and is buried in the Cool Springs C.P. Cemetery, Gibson County).  Sade Scott Huie’s twin:

4.     James Allen Scott [for clarity if not certitude, I’m calling him James Scott III] b. Dyer County 23 May 1839,
a twin to Sade Huie, he m. Jennie E. Miller (born 1853) and moved to Cleburne, Texas, near Fort Worth.
        The children of James Allen Scott & Jennie E. Miller (Scott) children:

               Milton E. SCOTT born in 1872 – died 17 SEP 1873;

R. B. SCOTT, born 1874.  I think I remember my Aunt Beth Huie referring to her father Howard Anderson
 Huie’s 1st cousin as “Bruce Scott.”
I also think Aunt Beth Huie said there was a Howard Scott who used to come from Texas to West Tenn.
 to work on Howard Huie’s farm bailing hay.  I may have these 2 Scott sons’ names wrong, though.
Nannie” Nancy E.Scott, b. 1876; I don’t think Nannie Scott ever married, as the Texas census records
 show her to be living with a brother and still surnamed Scott.

Isaac L. SCOTT, born 1879.  I think this may be the brother with whom Nannie Scott lived
as an adult.  His middle initial may be “H” not “L.” (Check the Texas Census records for Cleburne.)

5.     M.E. Scott, born 28 Dec 1841 in Dyer County, Tennessee.  She died
 2 January 1873.  –
Did she marry David Purviance McCorkle? If so, her name was Margaret Scott & she died in 1862.
 [Did she marry Richard W. Locke? No, to the latter, Dick Locke, married a Scott daughter, Sallie
Scott, of Lemuel Locke Scott & Margaret Permelia McCorkle Scott.]
This is not the Martha Scott who m. Anderson Jehiel McCorkle (above). Martha was a sister of Margaret Scott
(Mrs. David Purviance McCorkle). [ Two McCorkle brothers (DP & AJ) m. two Scott sisters (Margaret & Martha).]

6.  "Clementine” Tirzah H. Scott (Trimble),  born 22 April 1843 in Dyer County.  She died April 14, 1887.
  She married James Trimble, born 3 December 1831 and died 29 April 1909.  This is Clementine Scott (Trimble),
who had two children:  Elizabeth “Bettie” Trimble (Hundley), born December 1873; and
Charley “Charley” Trimble, born Oct. 1876.
Elizabeth “Bettie Trimble Hundley had two children, viz.,

Brian Hundley, born December 1896, who married Ben Anna Spence (Hundley)
and lived in Yorkville; they had three daughters, viz., Janie Hundley Hall (Mrs. Ralph Hall of Yorkville);
 Leah Brian Hundley; and  Beuna V. Hundley Sims.  Janie Hundley Hall’s two children were:
LaNita Hall (VanDyke) of Trenton, mother of Justin VanDyke) and Doug Hall, who died of heart disease in 2005.
Doug left one child, Dana Hall Welch,  by his 1st wife Susie Austin (Hall).

                                                             and

Elmo C. Hundley, born January 1899, who was a football player for the University of Tennessee, Knoxville,
 and married Margaret _____ (Hundley) of Knoxville.  She called him “Beau.” Others called him "Boss."
He predeceased her and she and he are buried in her hometown of Knoxville, Tennessee.
  Elmo & Margaret Hundley lived in Yorkville and had one daughter who never married, viz., Bettie Hundley,
 a graduate of Duke University circa 1960 and a chemist for Shell Oil Co. in Houston, where she resides in 2003.

Uncle Anderson Jehiel McCorkle kept Marthe E. Scott’s sister [Tirzah’s] Clementine’s husband, J.T. Trimble, in his home., or vice versa
 Source: Census records of Dyer County, Tennessee; and my father Ewing Huie who said Uncle Anderson McCorkle raised
 Clementine [Tirzah H. Scott] Trimble’s 2 grandchildren, sons of Bettie Trimble Hundley:
 “Boss” Elmo Hundley and Brian Hundley, each of whom lived in Yorkville. [Elmo & Margaret Hundley had one daughter,
 Bettie Hundley, who graduated from Duke University circa 1960 and became a chemist for Shell Oil in Houston;
 Bettie Hundley never married.]  Brian & Ben Anna Spence Hundley of Yorkville had: Janie Hundley (Mrs. Ralph Hall) of Yorkville;
 Leah Brian Hundley; and Buena V. Hundley Sims.

               Charley “Charley” Trimble, born Oct. 1876, married Vada Spence. They lived in Yorkville area and had two children:
One,        James Spence Trimble (father of Patricia Trimble Miller, Mrs. Finis Miller, of Yorkville; and Patricia’s little brother
 Bobby Trimble, who m. Renita Fletcher of Yorkville). Patricia Trimble Miller had children (a daughter René Trimble Carlton, whose husband is a lawyer),
but Bobby & Renita Fletcher Trimble did not have children]   and

Two,         Menthia Trimble (Hicks) who m. Claude Hicks and had two children:  Claudia Hicks, born 1946 (1st, Mrs. Don Miller;
 2nd Mrs. _______) and Larry Charles Hicks, who married a Simpson from Yorkville.

6.    Allen "Tobe" Scott, born 1844, died 1897.  He married Sarah R. Oliver, 1850-1937One child was Ida Scott, b. December 1874:
Ida Scott (Mrs. David Parrish) (Mrs. Moore, and therefore step-mother of Joe Harris Moore).
Ida’s children included Scott Parrish of Dyersburg; Roy Parrish who m. Ruby Taylor,  no issue; and Leon Parrish who married his step-sibling:
Joe Harris Moore’s sister Evelyn Moore.   Leon and Evelyn Moore (Parrish) lived in East Tennessee, I think Greenville or Johnson City.
Other children of "Tobe" Scott were:
Allen Gray Scott, M.D. -- I think he was called "Grey Scott." Update: In the year 2007 I found a granddaughter of Allen Gray Scott
who lives in Nashville; her name is Katherine Scott Trew.--She is a first cousin to Leon Parrish; Scott Parish; and Roy Parrish.
Allie Scott, born 1873;
Margaret Scott Chambers, b. 1898; and
Ernest R. Scott, 1884-1934.

7.    Thomas Elihu Scott, 20 Oct 1845 in Dyer County, Tennessee. I think he was called "Elihu."
A Church of Christ minister who m. Artie Hall & begot:  Lillian Scott (King), no issue, Newbern;. (Mrs. Jim King). He was an undertaker.
 Homer Scott; and  “Cudd’n Horace” Horace Scott m. Jessie Midyett
[Children of Horace Scott:  Annie Maude Scott (Brown) of Guntown, Mississippi,
 born circa 1907, no issue; Janie Sue (Mrs. Andrew Tilghman) (Mrs. Martin Green) (two children:
 Terry Tilghman (male) & Doris Ann “D’AnnTilghman Davenport who moved to Illinois);
 and Thomas Elihu Scott, Jr., a Church of Christ preacher in Henderson, Tennessee,
 who died in his 40s or 50s from leukemia. Rev. Thomas E. Scott had several children,
 one named Tommy Scott in Henderson; and a daughter Susan; and another son who was adopted.
 He m. Lavonne Billingsley who lives in Henderson, Tenn., in 2003.

[122]  The year 1853 imposed a deadly winter.  For example,  Edwin Alexander McCorkle died in Jan. of that winter, then his sister Margaret Permelia McCorkle (Mrs. Lemuel Locke Scott) died at the end of the year 1853, just after burying two of her small Scott children.  Also, James Scott I died in 1853.

Do any of these names sound familiar to anyone out there? As I understand it, James I, and his brother, John, arrived in America via SC. By the third/fourth generation, they were living in Tennessee, among the descendants of the McCorkles, Catheys, Naylors (?), Rutherfords, and other Scots who migrated from the Irish (sic, Scots) settlement in Rowan Co., NC, at Thyatira Presbyterian Church.  ANY assistance would be appreciated. Thank you.

[In trying to correct/supplement/ this entry by [email protected], Marsha Cope Huie [email protected] has made the beginning of this genealogy the James Scott of York District, South Carolina, 1777-1738, for Marsha knows nothing about this James’ father being James I, brother to a John.  Marsha does not refute it; she’s just never heard of the parentage of the James Scott born in 1777 and buried in Gibson County, West Tennessee.—October 2006.]

[Possibly Generation Zero (0):  a James Scott, immigrant to S.C., who had an immigrant brother named John. Source: Scott Mills.]

Generation One.  JAMES SCOTT, 1777-1853,
who married Sarah Dickey (Scott), 1777-1838, each born in 1777.  They married December 22, 1801.  Sarah Dickey was the daughter of John Dickey & Sarah Robinson Dickey of York District, SC.  Alas, it is the Sarah Robinson connection that makes us very distantly related to Vice President Richard “Dick” Cheney.

Generation Two.

Descendants of James Scott I [the James Scott who married Sarah Dickey Scott] were, Marsha Cope Huie, says:

Lemuel Locke Scott, 1804-1866, who m. Margaret Permelia McCorkle;

John Dickey Scott or John Dickie Scott who m. Susan or Susanah Williams;

James “Jimpse” Scott who m. Violet Roddy and then m. as 2nd wife a  Margaret Scott –I do not know who this 2nd wife Margaret Scott was;

William Scott who lived in Hardeman County, Tennessee, & m. Nancy Edwards Wellborn;

Tirzah Scott McCorkle (Mrs. Robert Andrew Hope or RAH McCorkle).

--Note that, above, siblings married siblings:  Margaret Permelia McCorkle who m. Lemuel Locke Scott was a sister to RAH McCorkle; and RAH McCorkle, a brother to Margaret Permelia McCorkle Scott, married Tirzah Scott, who was a sister to Lemuel Locke Scott.

Generation Three.  James Scott  who married Viola/Violet B. Roddy

        This James Scott and Viola/Violet B. Roddy Scott are buried in the Old Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery, Yorkville, Gibson County, Tennessee. I believe the infant William Scott buried there, too, 28 days old, was their son but am not certain about this.

GENERATION Four:

......."3 [37] 3" James Allen Scott  --Marsha Huie thinks this James Allen Scott entered by Scott Mills ([email protected]) must be in line with this generation 4.

James James Scott III  --  I Marsha Cope Huie, writing in 2006, do not understand the immediately foregoing entry:  “3 [37] Margaret Scott married 2 James Scott III”  This is what I, Marsha,  know: James Scott, 1810-1872, as I knew him married two wives: first, Violet B. Roddy and had the children below, although I don't think I have them in birth order:

Martha Scott McCorkle (Mrs. Anderson Jehiel McCorkle);

Sarah Scott Huie;

Tirzah "Clementine" Scott Trimble,

James Allen Scott who m. Jennie Miller and moved to Cleburne, Texas--he was a twin born in 1839 with "Sade" Huie;

“Tobe” Allen Scott;

Rev. Thomas Elihue Scott; and

Margaret Scott (Mrs. David Purviance McCorkle). Margaret died in 1862.

The two McCorkle husbands, AJ and DP McCorkle, were brothers, sons of Edwin Alexander McCorkle & wife née Jane Maxwell Thomas [McCorkle]. –Then James Scott, 1810-1872  (a son of Sarah Dickey & James Scott, each born in 1777, married, I think, a  MARGARET SCOTT.  I do not know who this 2nd-wife Margaret Scott was; although this James Scott, 1810-1872, is my direct ancestor (by his 1st wife Violet B. Roddy (Scott).

...........4 [19] "James Scott IV—born 1839." No, to me (Marsha Cope Huie) This James Scott  is James Allen Scott, born 1839 as a twin to Sade Sarah Elizabeth Scott Huie, so I’m moving Scott Mills's [email protected] ‘s entry here:  James Allen Scott, born 1839 married Jennie Miller; and they moved to Cleburne, Texas, near Fort Worth and Dallas — Marsha Cope Huie... James Allen Scott, born 1839, was a twin to Sarah Elizabeth “Sade” Scott Huie, 1839-1893.  [This James Allen Huie was a son of James Scott & Violet Roddy Scott]

John Scott.  --  Our, Marsha’s, family record just shows that this sibling John Scott died young.  No issue, but this John Scott was sibling of the people immediately above. That is to say, he was a son of James Scott, 1810-1882, and 1st wife Violet B. Roddy (Scott).

End of the children of "Jimps" James Scott who m. Viola or Violet Roddy.  Now to John Dickey Scott, a brother to the James "Jimps" Scott who m.arriedViolet B. Roddy: ___________________________________________________________________

James Scott, 1777-1853, and wife Sarah Dickey Scott, 1777-1838, had a son named John DICKEY Scott, who m. Susan Williams; and this John Dickie or Dickey Scott would be in my thinking Generation Two, for he was a son of James Scott, 1777-1853, and a son of Sarah Dickey Scott, 1777-1838.

John DICKIE Scott or, variously, JOHN DICKEY SCOTT married Susan Williams and had:

Child One. Sarah Scott who m. Mr. Falls, then Mr. Chaffin.

John Dickey Scott & Susan Williams also had: Child Two. Caroline Scott who m. Mr. Park.

John Dickey Scott & wife also had: Child Three Sue Annie Scott (McClellan).

John Dickey Scott and wife also had Child Four: John Scott who m. a miss Lake.

And John Dickey Scott & wife had Child Five, James, about whom I Marsha Cope Huie have no further information.

[email protected] now lists the Allen Scott who m. Sallie Oliver.    I’m (Marsha Cope Huie) editing it --Allen "Tobe" Scott--to conform with my records.  I may be in error, of course.

        [Generation One. James Scott, 1777-1853, & Sarah Dickey Scott, 1777-1838,  each born in 1777.  Generation Two.  James “Jimps” Scott & wife Violet Roddy (Scott).  Now to Generation Three. “Tobe” Allen Scott, a son of Jimps & Violet Rodddy Scott.

                    [One child of "Grey" Allen Grey Scott known to Marsha is Katherine Scott Trew, of Nashville, Tennessee.]

                     Katherine Scott Trew recently told me her aunt, Ida Scott (Parrish) (Moore) called my great-grandfather Julius M. Huie "Uncle Huie." I was glad to learn that, as it humanized an ancestor of mine whom I never got to meet.

................5 Scott Parrish  -- I think he lived in Dyersburg, Tennessee
................5 Leon Parrish  --  lived in East Tennessee, perhaps Morristown or Greenville; I think he worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority but may be wrong.

................5 Roy Parrish  --no children, buried McCorkle Cemetery, Dyer County, Tennessee, circa 2006. It is not fitting to speak ill of the dead.
....................+Ruby Taylor (Mrs. Roy Parrish)

.......3 Ernest Roscoe Scott  b: February 26, 1884  d: June 09, 1934.  I don’t think this son of Allen “Tobe” Scott married. I remember that Annie Glenn McCorkle, born 1918, told me she remembered when Ernest Scott came home to live with his family (not spouse). I may be wrong though about Ernest's unmarried state Perhaps he had a wife who died rather young. This needs checking.

..2 Hiram Scott  --Marsha Huie does not know about these people listed by Scott Mills.  Were Hiram and Thomas Scott brothers of the James Scott, 1777-1853, who married Sarah Dickey (Scott), 1777-1838?  Did they live in York District, South Carolina?
..2 Thomas Scott  --  --Marsha Huie does not know about these people listed by Scott Mills.  Were Hiram and Thomas Scott brothers of the James Scott, 1777-1853, who married Sarah Dickey (Scott), 1777-1838? Did they live in York District, South Carolina?

..1. James Scott I [He is Marsha Huie’s generation one, not Alton Mills’ –Alton Mills lists this James Scott as Generation Two.  [Alton Mills seems to be able to go back a generation farther than I can go based upon my/our old West Tenn. records.] This James Scott was born August 20, 1777 and died December 30, 1853 — & is buried Old Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Markers moved (by me) to McCorkle Cemetery closeby in Dyer County, Tennessee. He married Sarah Dickey on Dec 22, 1801 (in York District, South Carolina???).  –The only reason I had when I began genealogical research to suspect that James Scott, 1777-1838,  married again after the death of Sarah Dickey Scott in 1838 is a sentence in a letter dated 1838 or 1839 from Margaret Morrison McCorkle to a relative:  Old Friend Scott,” she says, “is married again, to a respectable old lady to the satisfaction of his friends.”  [Was she referring to this James Scott? I'm almost certain she was. Now, here is a Gibson County, Tennessee, marriage record that fits, but again I’m not certain:

        SCOTT, James   married  LANDERS, Mary   14-JUN-1838  So--evidently our ancestor James Scott, 1777-1853 married as a 2nd wife: Mary Landers (Scott).

......[James Scott, 1777-1853] +Sarah Dickey   b: November 01, 1777, York District, South Carolina;

      d: March 23, 1838, Gibson County, Tennessee/ lived on the Dyer County side, actually.  Buried Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Old cemetery. Markers moved to McCorkle Cemetery close-by in Dyer County, Tennessee. I placed their markers beside that of their granddaughter Sarah Scott Huie, 1839-1893, & Julius M. Huie. – I’ve done a lot of work on James & Sarah Dickey Scott on www.ancestry.com (anonymously); and James Ragon of Jackson, Tennessee, is the one who corrected me and properly identified Sarah Robinson (Mrs. John Dickey) of York District, South Carolina, as the mother of Sarah Dickey Scott (Mrs. James Scott).  Alas, I was the unlucky one who discovered that the Sarah Robinson Dickey connection makes us related to Vice President Dick Cheney, a discovery which almost made me give up genealogical research.

 [was he a “Junior?”] was father to Mrs. Julius Huie ("Sade" Sarah Elizabeth Scott), Julius’ 2nd wife after Julius’ 1st wife Sallie or Sarah McKnight Huie died peri-childbirth and was buried in the Cool Springs Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Gibson County, north of Yorkville.
2. JAMES SCOTT who m. VIOLa/Violet Roddy was a
son of Generation One Sarah Dickey Scott, 1777-1838, and Sarah Dickey’s husband James Scott, 1777-1853:

n       This James Scott “Jimpse” married Violet B. Roddy or Viola B. Roddy

n       ...........+Violet Roddy who was born in Dancyville, Fayette Co., Tennessee  -- [I , Marsha, am delighted to get this clue from Scott Mills, [email protected], as it is not in my, Marsha Huie’s, old family records. It makes sense to me, as my ancestor James Scott who m. Viola or Violet Roddy (as his 1st wife) had a brother WILLIAM SCOTT who m. Nancy Edwards Wellborn and who (William) moved from Dyer-Gibson County down to Hardeman County.  [I have an old deed showing William's purchase of land in Hardeman County.]

Fayette County is south toward Memphis and by Hardeman County.—Now, I can begin checking the Fayette County census records looking for Roddy ancestors....  Hallelujah, or as Steve Tucker Jr., born 1968 to Jennifer Catherine Huie & Steven Fisher Tucker, Sr., used to say when he was a little boy, “Hammalumen.”

 3. “Tobe” Allen Scott;

3 Rev. Elihu [Thomas Elihu] Scott;

 3. Margaret Scott (Mrs. David Purviance McCorkle, his 1st wife; she died during the Civil War, circa 1862).

David Purviance McCorkle married again after the death of Margaret Scott McCorkle in 1862.  Check the Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Obion Co., Tennessee. It's not far north of Newbern, going towards Reelfoot Lake north from Newbern.

...........3 [36] John Scott  -- Marsha does not know anything about this John Scott.

.......The 2nd Wife of [2] James Scott II, 1810-1882, whose 1st wife was Violet B. Roddy (Scott) was perhaps a Margaret Scott--or was she a Martha Scott--or a Mary Scott?
...........+[37] Margaret Scott  -- I, Marsha, do not know who this 2nd wife of my ancestor James Scott II was; the 1st wife was my ancestor, Violet B Roddy (Scott).  --In the spring of 2007 we placed a new tombstone for these Scotts in the Old Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Church cemetery. Unfortunately, I supplied erroneous information about the 2nd wife of "Jimps" James Scott to the United Monument Works of Union City, which then listed her name as Mary  Landers Scott; now I think Mary Landers married in 1838 James "Jimps" Scott's father James Scott, 1777-1853, but as stated am not certain.

...........4 [3] Martha Scott (Mrs. A. J. McCorkle)—another child of James Scott II & V.B. Roddy Scott.

................5 [5] Tom McCorkle— This John Thomas McCorkle was married but died without issue; was run over by a train at Newbern RR crossing.  AJ McCorkle raised some of his wife’s relatives; James Trimble (Clementine Scott Trimble’s widower) lived with AJ McCorklef for some time; and he kept Martha Scott McCorkle’s niece’s children (Brian Hundley & “Boss” Elmo Hundley).  I think but am not certain that AJ McCorkle married again after the death of Martha Scott McCorkle, his 1st wife.

................4 [9] Jimmie Huie—died young
................4 [10] Bennie Huie—died young.  Either James Huie or Benjamin Huie (named after their Huie grandfather Benjamin Huie of NC then Gibson-Dyer Counties and their Huie great-grandfather James Huie of North Caroline) died because the doctor about to perform surgery to correct a clubfoot forget to warn the parents not to let the child eat before the administration of chloroform.  Whichever child it was, James “Jimmie” or Benjamin “Bennie,” he died in the living room of the old Huie house built circa 1830 on the county line of Dyer/Gibson County, Tennessee; this story was related by my great aunt Margaret Sophronia "Fronie" Huie (Thompson) to my mother, Joyce Cope Huie.

THIS ENDS the LISTING OF THE CHILDREN OF LEMUEL LOCKE SCOTT & Margaret Permelia McCorkle (Scott); but more about their progeny lies directly below.

More about their Lemuel Locke Scott & Margaret Permelia McCorkle Scott’s children, Sallie L. Scott Rodgers Locke; and Leander Scott [Glenn & Aaron Scott’s grandfather); and Bob Robert Quincy Scott:

A daughter of Margaret Permelia McCorkle (Scott) & Lemuel Locke Scott was Sallie L. Scott (Rodgers)(Locke)— That is, I think Dick Locke was her second husband; and I think Dick Locke married again after the death of Sallie L. Scott (widow Rodgers) (Mrs. Dick Locke):
...........4 [56] Sallie L. Scott (Rodgers) (Locke), 1838-1876.  I think she is buried in the old Yorkville Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery,but must check the McCorkle Cemetery records as I know Dick Locke was at one time a trustee for the McCorkle Cemetery, although I have not found his grave anywhere, neither Yorkville or McCorkle Cemetery

Ella Bernice Smith) out of their land inheritance; and Aaron Scott thinks that is why his folks left the Church of Christ and became Methodists.]

Some early Gibson County, Tennessee, marriage records:

SCOTT, James marr.  LANDERS, Mary   14-JUN-1838
--This is almost certainly Margaret Morrison McCorkle’s “Old Friend Scott.”
In a letter Margaret writes that Old Friend Scott has married again,
 to the satisfaction of his friends, a very respectable old lady.
  --  Is this the James Scott, born 1777, of Pennsylvania, then of
York District, So.Carolina, whose first wife was Sarah Dickey (Scott), 1777-1838?
[I think so.]
SCOTT, James “JIMPSE”             marr.            RODDY, Vilett B           on 08-DEC-1832  This is without question a son of James & Sarah Dickey Scott, each parent having been born in 1777 & having lived in York District, SC, before moving to the Yorkville-Newbern area of West Tennessee.

SCOTT, James W            marr.           HARRIS, Emeline            on 06-DEC-1848
--When did Violet B. Roddy (Scott) die?  Could this be the second wife of James Scott
 who m. Violet B. Roddy?

SCOTT, John D[ickey]      marr.         WILLIAMS, Susanah C          on 01-JUN-1828
SCOTT, Levina             marr.           PETTIT, James              on 15-AUG-1844
SCOTT, Lions C            marr.          CHAFERO, Martha             on 22-FEB-1838
SCOTT, Lirzah [TIRZAH]    marr.         MCCORKLE, Robt A H           on 01-DEC-1828
 --This should say TIRZAH SCOTT.
SCOTT, Margarette         marr.           MATHIS, Lebanon D          on 18-APR-1841
SCOTT, Sarah E            marr.           MORTON, John V             on 27-APR-1853
I never heard of our Sarah Elizabeth Scott, born 1839, having a husband before she
married Julius M. Huie, but it’s possible. She would have been about 14 years old ???]
SCOTT, Sarah L [Sallie]            marr.          RODGERS, John A    on 21-APR-1858
  --This is the Sallie L. Scott Rodgers who later married Richard W. Locke.
She was a daughter to Margaret Permelia McCorkle & Lemuel Locke Scott.
Nobody has told me this, but I strongly suspect that Richard W. “Dick” Locke
who lived around Yorkville, and was a trustee for the McCorkle Cemetery in Dyer County,
descended from Colonel FRANCIS LOCKE, Rowan County, NC, hero of the Revolutionary War
Battle of Ramsour’s Mill [a.k.a. Ramseur’s Mill] in Lincoln County, North Carolina;
or of Revolutionary War General Matthew Locke of Rowan County, NC.
Colonel Francis Locke died in 1796 and is buried at Thyatira Presbyterian Church,
as is our Alexander McCorkle Sr., who died in 1800.
Also at Thyatira are buried John Knox and Jean GRACY Knox,
maternal great-grandparents of President James K Polk of Tennessee.
Also, a pirate or two, and someone alleged by many to have been a marshal for Napoleon.
General Matthew Locke had served in the NC colonial assembly and the Continental Congress.
Our folks in Tenn. were proud of their Locke association, whatever it was,
as they kept on naming their children Locke as either first or second Christian name,
for several generations.

 SCOTT, Sterling B         marr.            BIGGS, Mary E             on 23-NOV-1847
 SCOTT, Thos               marr.          MULLINS, Nancy              on 21-JAN-1856
 SCOTT, Wm                 marr.             KING, Biddy              on 24-SEP-1846
 SCOTT, Wm D               marr.        GILCHRIST, Amanda G           on 09-JUN-1835
 SCOTT, Wm D               marr.             WEBB, Sutelda E          on 30-APR-1849
 SCOTT, Wm P               marr.           LITTLE, Elizabeth A        on 24-JAN-1852
